February is always an indulgent month for us, with Valentine's Day and my birthday. This year, we headed to Amsterdam for a four night break. Obviously the first thing we did after booking our flights and Airbnb was Google the best restaurants in Amsterdam, and after a lot of searching we stumbled upon De Kas and made a reservation about two months in advance.
We got the tram to an area of Amsterdam we hadn't yet explored and thought we'd have trouble finding it, but the minute we hopped off the tram we were greeted by this incredible glowing neon greenhouse, set back from the street. It's a truly magical place, and even if you can't eat there, you must go for a look at the greenhouse at night!
There's a fixed menu is based on the harvest of the greenhouse, supplimented produce from local suppliers, so all the ingredients are super fresh and seasonal, making for a unique experience every time. I hope we can visit again, maybe in the summertime to see how the menu has evolved.
We went for the fixed three-course dinner menu, priced at €49.50 per person. Including a couple of appetisers - we had delicious raw sprouts and olives, a selection of three small starters, a main and a dessert. The waiters tell you what you're about to eat, but the list of fresh ingredients is too long to absorb and before you know it, the food has arrived and it's a delicious surprise.
We also opted to have wines paired with each course (which were incredible in themselves!), and I think we had a few more glasses on top of that, so the bill was a pretty extravagant €200, but for a once in a lifetime experience, it was worth every penny.
I wish we had more photos of the food, and I wish I'd taken notes on what we'd actually eaten! However, being in Amsterdam, just the two of us, in an amazing restaurant on Valentine's Day called for complete focus to soak up all the good vibes! It's nice to take a step back from the camera and enjoy what you're doing and who you're with. It was definitely one of the best nights ever.
You can find De Kas at Kamerlingh Onneslaan 3 1097 DE Amsterdam.
